英語單詞cancer的本意是螃蟹，巨蟹座就是大寫的Cancer。它是怎么跟“惡性腫瘤”扯上關(guān)系的呢？原來，古希臘時(shí)代的名醫(yī)希波克拉底首次描述了惡性腫瘤與良性腫瘤的區(qū)別，并詳細(xì)闡述了身體各部位的腫瘤，并把處于發(fā)展期和發(fā)生潰瘍的腫瘤命名為karkinos，在希臘語里就是“螃蟹”的意思。希波克拉底之所以把腫瘤稱為“螃蟹”，可能是因?yàn)閻盒阅[瘤的表面形狀惡性腫瘤通常有一個(gè)堅(jiān)實(shí)的中心，然后向周遭伸出一些分支，就像螃蟹的形狀。由于希波克拉底反對打開病人身體的做法，所以他所描述的是外觀可見的腫瘤。
